VARTA continues support for MR & releases Winter Walking Guide
Consumer batteries manufacturer VARTA released ‘The Wanderer’s Guide to Winter in the Great Outdoors’ in time for the clocks going back over the weekend of 30/31 October and the download publication is now available across the UK, full of advice for the winter months. Using the expertise of Mountain Rescue England and Wales (MREW) and the British Cave Rescue Council (BCRC), the free downloadable infographic features a series of top tips for safely embarking on winter adventures.
Featuring recommendations to pack back-up torches, portable power banks, warm clothing and a hard copy map, MREW is keen to stress that planning a walk properly can help save lives.
Mike Margeson, operations lead for MREW, said: “While the weather may be starting to turn a little colder, it doesn’t mean that the British countryside is out of bounds. Snowy hilltops and frosty meadows can provide an incredible backdrop to a winter ramble or outdoor sports challenge, while there are plenty of winter walking routes to help work off the Christmas calories!”
“However, to enjoy the season at its finest, it is important to be prepared. Sturdy boots are a must, hats and gloves are crucial and emergency rations are never wasted. It is also essential to plan your route in advance, make sure you have enough power to charge your devices in case of an emergency and spare torches to light your way if it gets darker than you expect. We’re delighted that VARTA is helping us to spread this vital message as local rescue teams still frequently get called out to benighted groups of walkers.”
Following a successful two-year partnership, which has seen VARTA provide MREW with more than 60,000 batteries, power packs and torches (representing a saving of more than £30,000), the two organisations have agreed a three-year extension to the sponsorship agreement. The deal will see VARTA continue to supply its award-winning products to more than 3,500 mountain and cave rescue volunteers nationwide, as well as providing an annual cash donation and ongoing fundraising support for the 57 local teams.
Natalie Carney, trade marketing manager at VARTA Consumer UK, added: “In the past two years, we’ve been pleased to support the hard work of the dedicated volunteers who give up their free time every week for the MREW cause.
“We’ve had very positive feedback on the VARTA products from rescue teams and we are working closely with the organisation to provide even greater levels of support – including delivering The Wanderer’s Guide to Winter in the Great Outdoors. We look forward to our continued relationship with MREW.”
