Variety performance in memory of local hero Ken Blakeman
Friends and family of Ken Blakeman, a long-standing member of Kinder Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT), have organised a
variety performance night, “Holding out for a hero“, at the Dancehouse Theatre on Oxford Road, Manchester on Sunday 26 February 2017 at 3:00pm, with proceeds being donated to KMRT. The event will be a “variety show of music and dance with children and young people including a guest celebrity appearance”.
Ken was a keen and dedicated Mountain Rescue team member for over 40 years, the Chairman of KMRT and also the Chairman of the Peak District Mountain Rescue Organisation (PDMRO), when he tragically collapsed, in July 2016, during a team call-out to help a teenager in difficulties on Kinder Scout. Despite the best efforts of his team-mates and paramedics, Ken could not be saved.
A proud father and grandfather, Ken’s passing was mourned at the time by people from as far away as Australia who remembered him from their youth in Stockport when they played with the community football team that Ken supported. An incredibly modest and humble man, Ken was immensely generous in both spirit and deed; he was, indeed, every bit the unsung, everyday hero.
The proceeds from the event will go to help the team with its annual running costs of approximately £25K; the team is manned entirely by unpaid volunteers providing a 24/7/365 service and these funds will help to save lives on and off the hill so, from all of the team, thank you for your support.
Tickets for the event, priced at £15.00 (£12.50 concession), can be purchased via the Dancehouse Theatre’s box office on 0161 237 9753 or online at http://www.thedancehouse.co.uk/events/2017/121-holding-out-for-a-hero.
