PDMRO 40th Anniversary

Letting off a flare on Chinley Churn

Peak District Mountain Rescue Organisation (PDMRO) came into existence 40 years ago. The PDMRO was formed following two fatal accidents, the deaths in 1963 of two climbers in an avalanche in Wilderness Gully, Chew Valley, and the deaths of three scouts during the 1964 Four Inns Walk. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of its formation, members of the seven MR teams that make up the PDMRO climbed to the 40 highest trig points in the Peak District for 12:00pm on the 19th September 2004. Members of Kinder MRT climbed to the trig points at Kinder Low, Sandy Heys, Brown Knoll and Chinley Churn where they set off smoke flares at 12:00pm precisely. Meanwhile, the PDMRO had organised an event for the press and public in Castleton which included a large screen showing photographs of Rescue Team members at each trig point sent in via mobile phone. The event helped to raise the profile of Mountain Rescue Teams in the Peak District.
