Cracken Edge 2016
Cracken Edge Fell Race Report
After some gloomy forecasts and some rain during the day, we were lucky that the race took place in the dry. As usual, there were plenty of marshals on the way, and the route was well marked. There was a good turnout of 200 runners in the field, a few more than last year.
Conditions were windy on the tops and wet under foot, with some glorious views over the hills particularly coming down from the top on the last leg. The route to the finish went through some very boggy patches, resulting in at least 3 runners losing a shoe. One runner came over the finish carrying both of his shoes, and another was almost completely covered in mud from head to toe. They were all smiling.
Records were not expected to tumble in the conditions, however Ann-Marie Jones beat her own record in the over 60s category established last year by 4 minutes, with a time of 58:34. Correction from Ann-Marie: “Sorry to say I did not beat my own Lady over 60 record. My best time as a 60 year old was 2013 when my time was 56.01”. Glossop Mountain Rescue Team beat their previous record of 89 points to come in with a total of 66 points.
Jo Bednall of Buxton AC came close to the record for the women’s over 50s, missing it by just 16 seconds.
We trialled collecting the results at the finish directly on to a computer, and this allowed us to get the results out much more quickly than usual. If any race organisers want to know more about this, please contact KMRT.
