Kinder Mountain Rescue Team were recently featured on BBC’s Close Calls programme.
“It is with great sadness that Kinder Mountain Rescue Team announce the death of long-standing team member, Ken Blakeman. Ken, aged 69, from Great Moor, Stockport, has been a stalwart of the team for over 40 years and was the Team’s Chairman. He was also Chairman of the Peak District Mountain Rescue Organisation, helping to guide not only his own team, but also the other 6 teams that make up the organization.
Ken collapsed on the hill during a call-out on the afternoon of Saturday 2nd July 2016, whilst making his way up onto Kinder to assist a young Duke of Edinburgh walker in distress. Despite the best efforts of his teammates, and the assistance of a Helimed crew, Ken was pronounced dead on arrival at Sheffield Northern General Hospital.
He leaves a wife, Sandra, and sons Paul and Carl.
Team Leader Neale Pinkerton said, “Ken was a true gentleman, the nicest man you could hope to meet. He never had a bad word to say about anyone and was always ready to help others, whatever the time, weather or season – Mountain Rescue in general and Kinder Team particularly have lost a great friend.”
Ken was a full and active member of the team, regularly out on the hill during call-outs and will be sadly missed but fondly remembered for his humility, warmth and generous spirit, always ready to offer encouragement, support or advice to team members old and new.”
