Alan’s Diary – Joint Exercise 19.7.09
It was a bit of an early start. The exercise was taking place in Edale and I had volunteered to help pack the Land Rovers and drive to the RV. Neale was trying to make sure we got there in plenty of time and did the job so well, that we arrived before the Casualties had set off.
This was a joint exercise with Buxton, Edale and Glossop teams. Three local MPs, Tom Levitt, Charlotte Atkins and Angela Smith, had agreed to be our casualties for the day. They were helping us raise awareness of Mountain Rescue issues and also arranging a bit of fund raising for the PDMRO (Peak District Mountain Rescue Organisation).
After a bit of waiting around, we were briefed with the details of the exercise and set off. We were teamed up with Buxton and sent to find one of the MPs, who was supposed to have chest pains, at Grindslow Knoll. Edale and Glossop were sent to a second MP with an allegedly broken leg in Grinds Brook.
It didn’t take too long to reach the location, and we soon had Tom Levitt packaged up on the stretcher and ready to go. As we set off, the weather lived up to the typical July forecast and the heavens opened. On the way down, we switched between carrying the stretcher and sledging it on the grass.
After an hour or so of sledging and carrying, we arrived back at the Nag’s Head in Edale, just as the sun finally came out!
